Croatia has recently become a must-go destination for many budget backpackers. However, it is not without good reason that tourism in Croatia continues to grow. Croatia is a beautiful country with history, beaches, and great people. That being said, when the country is discussed the Dalmatian coast and port cities often glean most of the attention, so you may be wondering, is the country’s capital, Zagreb worth a stop? For how long?
Zagreb is the vibrant quirky capital of Croatia. It is a cost-effective introduction to Croatia that provides a juxtaposition between city life and the jaw-dropping coastline.
Although there are many reasons to visit this underrated capital, three stand out whether you are a first timer in Croatia or an island-hopping professional.
#1 Soak in the Vibe
Zagreb was my first introduction to the Balkans in 2017. It is thanks to the hospitality of a couple Zagreb natives and the city that I aim to return to the region whenever possible. Why? The vibe of Zagreb is unmistakable. Although the city is home to many working Croats, it retains much of the slow pace charm associated with the Balkans.
Did you know that Zagreb, unknowingly to most, boasts a large cafe culture? On Saturday, friends and coworkers meet at the ‘horse statue’ to find coffee to sample. The horse statue is a large black sculpture in the center of town located across the street from the Zagreb Eye. From there, locals chat with a cup of strongly brewed coffee in hand. However, if you are visitor, you may have the privilege of being greeted with hospitality none other than that found in Zagreb. Although most Croatians live modestly, Croatians are incredibly generous. As a visitor, you can soak up the vibe of Zagreb by walking down side streets, sampling produce from local markets, and sitting down in a cafe among locals.

#2 Learn about Love
When visiting Zagreb, you can learn about love during a visit to the The Museum of Broken Relationships. The museum features failed love stories from around the world. People tell their narratives that are often paired with photographs and objects from their past. This must-see museum remains one of the most creative I have seen to date. Entrance is 40 kuna (approximately 6 euros). The Museum of Broken Relationships is located at: Cirilometodska ul. 2, 10000, Zagreb, Croatia. Open hours are from 9 AM to 10:30 PM daily, except from October 1st to May 31st when hours are 9 AM to 9 PM.
However, there is more to learn about Zagreb as you fall in love with its charm! For architecture lovers, the Baroque style buildings of Zagreb will make you swoon. From St. Mark’s Church to smaller buildings, the beauty of this place is far-reaching. If Zagreb has not captured your heart, another appeal of the city is its history.
When in Zagreb, take time to understand the deeper socio-historical context of the city. From 1991 to 1995, the Croatian War of Independence took place. Croats fought Serbs for independence while advancing into territory known today as Bosnia and Herzegovina. By considering Zagreb a place steeped in history, one comes to admire the city for what remains today.

#3 Eat your way onward
Croatia’s capital represents a wide variety of cultural influences from Croatian and Serbian to Bosnian and Italian. The multiculturalism of Zagreb can be tasted in the food.
To explore Zagreb to its fullest, one must eat. Croatian cuisine is influenced by its location and history. Subsequently, popular dishes in Zagreb (and across Croatia) are often hearty with many dishes featuring a meat base For instance, cevapcici, a dish that comes with grilled sausage link and potatoes. While the meal is simple, it remains an important staple in Balkan cuisine. However, due to Croatia’s proximity to Italy, Italian dishes can also be found at a reasonable price.
To take in the culture and food of Zagreb, I recommend spending 2-3 days in Zagreb before traveling to a next destination or heading home. Even the most budget-conscious travelers are able to find good quality filled food starting at around 40 kunas or 6 euros.
Pro Tip: If you want to try some sweet treats visit the bakery across the street from the Zagreb Cathedral located at: 10000, Zagreb, Croatia.
In short, there are a lot of reasons to visit Zagreb, a gateway into Croatia!
