Teaching in Vietnam: #1

In my CK8 class, we welcomed a new student. As usual, I asked my students to introduce themselves by sharing their name, age and an interesting fact about themselves. During this activity, one of my students blew me away. She stated her name, age and proclaimed ‘I’m gay!’.

The vulnerability of this statement, even if only as a joke, really impressed me. As a new teacher who continues to learn about who I am and perhaps more importantly who I want to be, I was touched that this student shared so openly in my classroom.

Teaching is something that I have heard described as a dance between art and magic. Teachers are collaborators waiting at the ready to challenge and assist their students. The art of thinking melds with the magic of learning how. As I learn from my students through shared space, I strive to make my presence in the classroom one of support and compassion for all students. Today made me think of ways I can ‘show up’ for my students in order to facilitate a space where their voices are heard.

Sexuality isn’t an easy subject for anyone, especially if you’re 12 and just starting to define who you want to be to the world. I have profound respect for this student and the many that will keep me thinking about how to improve myself and my teaching practice.

Side note: The above mentioned student came up to me after class and while directly discussing her statement felt out of place, I was able to express my gratitude for her ongoing class participation.
