Reykjavik is the northern most capital in the world. This small but mighty city is stunning. From the sun voyager to Harpa concert hall, there are loads of things to see when venturing out of your hotel or hostel on a rest day from touring, during a layover, or just for the sake of exploring. I will go into some of my favorites below!
Hallgrimskirkja Church
Arguably the most famous thing to do in Reykjavik is something I stumbled upon after following a road to navigate to the biggest church in Iceland, Hallgrimskirkja Church – known for its distinctive shape. The views from the top are simply amazing, but: how do you get in? How do you buy you ticket?

Once you approach the main building, you will see a reader board sign with some information. Check the sign to see if you can enter the building. More than likely, unless there is a mass, you will be able to go to the top of the church. From the main entrance, take a left into the building and then another sharp left to find the ticket desk located among souvenirs in a small shop. Here, you will buy your ticket for 1,200 ISK or about 9 USD. From the top, you will be able to see a birdseye view of the city!

Skólavörðustígur street and surroundings
One of my absolutely favorite bits of Reykjavik has been cute street art found around Skólavörðustígur street and beyond. From the orange tabby cat to the Viking mural, Iceland’s main city seems to be home to a variety of fun and funky places to explore. I’d also add that cafe exploration is definitely a worthy endeavor here! From Cafe Babalu to Cafe Te & Kaffi, there’s a myriad of vibes and price points to explore!

Sun Voyager
In addition to the church and street art, the sun voyager is unbeatable on a sunny Icelandic day! This historical landmark is meant to symbolize hope and freedom as an ode to the sun. After winning a competition to sculpt a sculpture for Reykjavik’s 200th anniversary, Jón Gunnar’s piece became embedded as a symbol of the city.

From the Sun Voyager to the Old Town, Reykjavik is a small but mighty city as mentioned above. I look forward to continued exploration tomorrow!
