Explore Skopje: Cultural Gems and History

Skopje is the capital of North Macedonia, a country in the Balkans region of Europe. The city is funky, full of things to do, and steeped in history. The city has influence of both the Greek and Roman time periods. In this article, I will outline my favorite 4 things to do in the city and the reasons.

Old Bazaar

The Old Bazaar in Skopje has to be one of my favorites in all of the Balkans! It is aesthetically beautiful and exciting to shop within. From local food to souvenirs and ice cream treats, this place is the heart of Skopje’s cultural center. It is also home to a large number of Albanians. The Albanians in this part of the city are predominantly Muslim. Therefore, the background of the Old Bazaar is set up like the center of an Arab market place. It’s okay to get a little lost here; that is part of the adventure!

Bridges, bridges, bridges!

Skopje is home to a number of beautiful bridges. These bridges provide a great look into the newer section of the city. The Vardar river separates the Old Bazaar and historical section of the city from modern high-rises. I highly encourage you to check out the bridges and walk between two sections of the city. Along the way, you will find great eateries, a waterfront promenade, and wonderful statues.

Skopje Fortress (Kale)

The Skopje Fortress was built in the 6th century AD with additions made in the 10th and 11th centuries. This fortress is a highlight of Skopje and do not miss it! The fortress provides stunning panoramic views of the city. The fortress provides a way to step back into Ottoman history and the history that pre-dated that time.

I hope you have enjoyed this itinerary! Happy travels -K
