Luang Prabang, Laos: Introduction

Luang Prabang is the ancient capital of Laos. The city is a UNESCO world heritage site. This status is due to its architecture, cultural richness, and access to the Mekong River. The influence of Buddhism on the atmosphere of this Laotian city can be strongly felt. The mix of colonial architecture and golden-roofed temples makes for a dazzling introduction to Laos. My time in Luang Prabang was a wonderfully unique experience. Below, I will share 5 recommended things to do in this charming city!
Visit a Temple: Wat Chom Si

Within the historic town is a hike up a mountain where you can see a temple and great views. The temple is called Wat Chom Si. By Googling the best routes or asking your accommodation for a map, you can easily find your way here. The small temple at the top is operation, so be mindful of this. However, it is frequented by new visitors so stepping inside for a look is highly recommended. In most temples, including this one, shoes must be removed.
Wander a Night Market

Near the way to enter the Wat Chom Si hike is the night market. This market is a lens into local traditions. It is also a great place to buy souvenirs or grab a snack. The colorful tents also make for great photography opportunities.
Walk across a Bamboo Bride

Located near the night market is a bamboo bridge- neat, right? I recommend taking a closer look and walking onto the bridge. The bridge is a fun experience and something not commonly seen outside of South East Asia.
Watch Monks Receive Morning Alms

Wake up early and visit a location close to the Morning Market. This way, you can see a procession of monks in orange robes giving alms. The purpose of monks giving and receiving alms in Laos is commonly a way to give back to the community. Another reason is that it can serve as a way of reaching a better spiritual bond.
Through watching a line of monks in the early morning as the sun rises, you will have a unique experience. Metal bowls are meant to collect offerings. This said, in some cases, taking photos of monks faces can seen as disrespectful. Therefore, it is recommended that if you’d like to take photos take them in a respectful manner.
Bonus: Check out a Waterfall: Kuang Si Waterfall
A lovely addition to any Luang Prabang itinerary is to visit the Kuang Si waterfall. It is a sharp blue color with multi-tiered falls. You can see visitors swimming or just hanging out near the falls. If you’d like to get into the water, bring a swimsuit and a towel and head right in! You can follow the lead of others and check out some of the calmer spots to sit and relax. This site can be reached by motorbike or taxi. At the time of writing this, no buses operated to this location because it was out of the city.

From alms to waterfalls, Luang Prabang is a treat that should be added to all South East Asian itineraries! I hope you can see why; have a splendid time -K
