Malaysia: The Perfect 10 day Itinerary

Malaysia is located near Indonesia and Singapore in Southern Asia. The country is booming with things to see, eat and wonderful people watching opportunities. During my time in Kuala Lumpur, I recall a dazzling display of cultures and diversity. Penang offered a more laid back feeling. Below, I will describe my ideal 10-day itinerary in Malaysia. This is what I would have done if I had more time on my original trip or two.

Kuala Lumpur (2-3 days)

โ€œKLโ€ is a metropolitan city with a large population. From architecture to food finds, this city is well-worth spending 2 to 3 days in. One thing you cannot miss is the Batu Caves, but it requires some stamina to climb all of the stairs! Some additional things to do include:

  • Thean Hou Templeย
  • Petronas Twin Towers and nearby park – simply iconic!ย
  • Jalan Alor Food Street – night marketย
  • Central Marketย
  • Batu Caves – great for photos!ย
  • Perdana Botanical Gardensย
  • Sultan Abdul Samad Building
  • Sultan Abdul Samad Jamek Mosque – for insight into local culture / practicesย

After your time in KL, it is time to head to another gem – Malacca, Malaysia. Located about 2-3 hours away, you should be able to take a train or bus fairly directly.

Malacca (2 days)

Well-known as a spot for international trading due to its location, the city is marked with strong history! From a fortress to temples and more, this wonderful city is worth spending a day or two!

  • A Famosa – fortressย
  • Dutch Squareย
  • Christ Church Melaka – the iconic red one!ย
  • Masjid Selat Melaka
  • The Shore Sky Tower – has an observation deckย
  • Taming Sari Tower
  • Cheng Hoon Teng Temple
  • Church of Saint Paul
  • Jonker Street Night Market – night marketย

Malacca is full of charm. Like KL, it has a variety of religious centers. There is also a night market to check out.

After two days in Malacca, it is time to head onward to the Cameron Highlands via bus (approximately 5.5-6 hours) or driving (slightly under 5 hours).

Cameron Highlands (1-2 days)

The Cameron Highlands are known for their breathtaking landscapes. You will be amazed by the views in this part of Malaysia! They are stunning. The photos do not do this wonderful location justice.

The whole country offers a wonderful cultural experience, but Penang stands out. It has a strong arts scene due to the street art. It also boasts a great food and street food culture. There are many locations where people can sit outside after buying some inexpensive but tasty food! During your time in Penang, explore the following:
