Malta is a wonderful island known for sun, culture, and stunning architecture. Located in the Mediterranean between Sicily and Northern Africa, there are endless things to explore on the island of Malta.

I will detail an approximate itinerary below. You can follow it on a first visit to Malta. It includes time in the capital, Valletta, as well as several other locations. The estimated time frame for a leisurely stay in Malta would be around 8 days.

Valletta (capital city) (2 days)

Most flights will land into Valletta, the capital of Malta. It would be remiss to miss time in this wonderful city! My suggestion is to spend 2 full days wandering and getting a sense of the atmosphere.

  • Walled city – known for architecture and as the oldest part of the city
  • Fort Saint Elmo
  • St. John’s Co-Cathedral
  • Upper Barrakka
  • Lower Barrakka
  • Triton Fountain
  • Maltese waterfront

Mdina (2 days)

Your next stop will be Mdina, the former capital of Malta. This city is known as the ‘Silent City’ and has a history dating back 4000 years. Some interesting things to do in the city include:

  • Mdina Gate
  • St. Paul’s Cathedral / Catacombs
  • Bastion
  • Old City Fortress
  • Domus Romana
  • Palazzo Falson
  • Carmelite Priory (church)

Marsaxlokk (1 day)

First, explore the wonders of Mdina. Then, venture onto Marsaxlokk, a small fishing village. This visit will give you a taste of local life. Here, you can visit St. Peter’s Pool, the local market and explore the village on foot.

The final stop on your Malta itinerary will be Gozo.
