Cape Town, South Africa: Nature, Wildlife, and Culture

Cape Town, South Africa is a cultural center of South Africa. The city offers a vast variety of activities. These include wonderful views, great food, cultural sights, nearby wildlife, and beach activities. There is even more to explore.

During the time where I lived in Vietnam. I recall hearing stories about Cape Town from friends who were raised in and around South Africa. The city was always spoken of highly, but normal safety precautions are strongly encouraged. I have not been to South Africa yet. It is on my list, but these are the things I would do on a first trip to Cape Town.

The following guide will explore things to do in and around Cape Town for first-time tourists. I provide links only as examples of tours or activities. I do not endorse any of them. The below itinerary is fun, action-packed and suitable for any traveler. Let’s begin!

For starters, when I heard you could see penguins at a local beach, I was awe-struck. This is why Boulders Beach makes it to the front of the list.

Boulders Beach

Located in Simon’s Town near the Table Mountain National Park, this beach enclave is wonderful for nature lovers. From waves to sandy coastline, you can also spot colonies of penguins waddling around.

Bo-Kaap

A formally racially separated area of the city is now known for colorful buildings and a bustling vibe. Bo-Kaap is a hip part of Cape Town with cobblestone streets and architecture that will surely dazzle you.

Robben Island

A trip to Cape Town would be lacking if you missed Robben Island. The island is home to the prison where Nelson Mandela was kept. The name translates to “seal island”. You will be able to enjoy the nature and ferry ride that departs from the V&A waterfront. You will also learn about the country’s cultural and racially-divided past.

Table Mountain

Views! Table Mountain arguably provides some of the most stunning views of the city. Accessible by cable car, on a tour, or via hiking, the end of the hike is definitely picturesque.

A number of things surround the area beyond these sites in Cape Town. There are good eats, shopping, and more. This guide is not exhaustive. It is meant to provide a glimpse into things to do in Cape Town and around the city.

Cape of Good Hope and Garden Route

The next stop on the list is the Cape of Good Hope and the Garden Route. Both are known for stunning views and making for a unique experience. The Cape of Good Hope is a coastline that cannot be missed. The Garden Route is a long driving route that spans the Southern edge of South Africa. Along the drive, you can see wildlife, beaches, small towns, cities and more.

Stellenbosch

The last mentioned stop is for wine lovers and nature loving spirits. Stellenbosch is a small city / town near Cape Town known for wine regions. It is also home to Stellenbosch University and called “Stellies” by some locals. The Cape Dutch architecture provides a reminder of the country’s Dutch colonial past. The food is apparently wonderful and varied as well.
