Solo adventures are the best kind of therapy as they provide you with time to reflect and are a major confidence boost. After traveling to 49 countries and countless cities across the globe, I am often asked ‘What are your favorite destinations?’
When considering the question of my favorite destinations, I often think of “who”, “how” and “why”. More specifically, “who is asking?”, because a family friendly destination might look different than a girls’ trip and being able to customize my recommendations is important to me. Next, I consider “how”, which means “how are they looking to travel?” From budget traveler to hotel dweller, I have explored a huge array of accommodations in a number of countries and continents. I like to keep in mind the “how are they looking to travel?” as a gauge for cost. If budget travel is relevant, my suggestions may look different than if someone wanted an exclusive-feeling destination for a honeymoon. In addition, I consider the “why”, which gets at someone’s purpose. Are they going for work? Are they looking to socialize while abroad? Are they seeking the coolest bars or cafes? Highest mountains or most unique landscapes? My recommendations may be shaped in response to the above considerations. Yet, with this in mind — here are my top picks for where to go it alone:
Note: These recommendations are made with solo female travelers on a budget in mind. Safety is given priority as well as cool vibes and cost effectiveness.

#1: Albania – For the adventurers at heart! From hidden beaches to rugged mountain trails, Albania is affordable and full of off-the-beaten-path gems. 🏞️
When I was in Albania, I divided my time between Girokaster, the ‘Stone city’ and Sarande, Albania. During this time, I aimed to explore something “off-the-beaten-path” as well as was seeking to be close to a major ferry port so I could do a day-trip to Corfu, Greece.
The ‘Stone city’ lived up to the hype and exceeded expectations. With traditional elegance, the city was stunning and surreal all in one.
Sarande was a great port city to venture into Greece from.

#2: Thailand – The ultimate gateway to Asia 🌏. Whether you want temples, tropical islands, cooking classes or jungle treks, Thailand is a solo traveler heaven. 🛵
I spend about a month in Thailand for the first of many trips to the country in 2018. It was my entry point to what would be 2.5 years in Asia with time in, but not limited to: Vietnam, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, India, Laos, Taiwan, etc.

From the Thai islands of Koh Phi Phi and the more laid-back Koh Lanta to the cities of Bangkok, Ayutthaya, Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai, I had a blast exploring. As a diverse and budget friendly destination, I highly recommend some pad thai in Bangkok, temple peeping in Chiang Mai or island hopping.
#3 Slovenia – One of the safest countries in Europe, and packed with peaceful lakes, forests, and charming towns. Perfect for a calm yet awe-inspiring escape. 🍃

️Slovenia, at the time, was a bit undiscovered by non-European travelers. When I went in 2019, I found myself able to explore this less crowded alternative to countries like Italy or Greece. From the capital of Ljubljana to the small town of Piran, I adored my time here. Note: Lake Bled and Bohinj are not to be missed!
Thanks for reading and safe travels – K
