I visited Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina in the summer of 2018. Before my visit, the country was primarily just a challenging name to memorize for my elementary school geography tests. Yet, I would be amazed by what I found during my visit.
In the heart of the Balkans, Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina holds history as breathtaking as its landscapes. Yet, it is also as tragic as its scars. The Bosnian War (1992–1995) was one of Europe’s most devastating conflicts since WWII, sparked by the breakup of Yugoslavia. Over 100,000 lives were lost, yet today, the country stands as a place of resilience, remembrance, and cultural unity.
During my time in Sarajevo and Mostar, the history of the country was palpable. The abandoned bobsledding track from the 1984 Olympics is a reminder. History museums contribute as well. The country integrates its difficult past into a conscious effort. This ensures its significance is never forgotten.
Visiting Bosnia isn’t just about charming Ottoman streets or iconic bridges—it’s also about understanding the stories that shaped them. Walking through the Sarajevo Tunnel of Hope connects you to this recent history. Seeing the bullet-marked walls in Mostar enhances this connection in a way no textbook can. By learning about the Bosnian War while traveling, you honor the people who lived it. You support a nation still recovering. If you’re planning a trip, make time for historical sites and local museums—because knowing the past makes every step in Bosnia more meaningful.✨
