Why Morocco Changed My Travel Life Forever 🌍✨

I still remember stepping off the plane and feeling like I had just landed in another dimension. The colors, the scents, the sounds—it was nothing like anything I had ever experienced before. At the time, I didn’t know it, but this was the moment I truly began stepping out of my comfort zone. The pace of Marrakesh was fast and an overload for the senses! I am embarrassed to admit that I spent the first ~hour of my time in the city trying to gather my thoughts from the security of the riad, a Moroccan guest house.

From Europe to Africa: A Travel Shift That Changed Everything

After spending months traveling through Europe while living in Copenhagen, Denmark, I craved something different. I did not know it at the time, but I wanted culture shock, color, and contrast. That craving led me to Morocco—a destination that felt bold, punchy, and wildly alive.

Little did I know, this “quick trip” would be the beginning of a much deeper travel journey, one that would later take me on travels that spanned two years in Asia, returns to Europe, and on adventures across South America.

But it all started here.

Why Visit Morocco? What Makes It So Special?

Morocco isn’t just a destination—it’s an experience. The vibrant culture, rich history, stunning landscapes, and sensory overload all come together in a way that’s truly unique. Nowhere is this more evident than in Marrakesh, a city that pulses with life.

Walking through Jemaa El-Fna, Marrakesh’s iconic main square, is like stepping into a living, breathing storybook. Fresh orange juice vendors, snake charmers, traditional musicians, and food carts all compete for your attention in a beautiful display of organized chaos. It’s intense—and utterly unforgettable.

Must-Do Experiences in Morocco

If you’re heading to Morocco, here are a few unforgettable experiences I highly recommend:

  • Take a Day Trip to Ouzoud Falls
Located about 2.5 hours from Marrakesh, Ouzoud Waterfalls are some of the tallest and most beautiful in North Africa. The lush scenery, wild monkeys, and serene tea stops along the way make it a fantastic escape from the city heat.
  • Enjoy Traditional Moroccan Mint Tea with a View of Jemaa El-Fna
One of my favorite travel memories is sipping hot, sugary mint tea on a rooftop terrace overlooking the square at sunset. The call to prayer echoing in the background as the city lights flicker on is something I’ll never forget.
  • Wander the Souks
The maze-like souks of Marrakesh are full of handmade crafts, vibrant textiles, spices, and souvenirs. Be ready to haggle, and don’t be afraid to get lost—it’s part of the charm.
  • Experience Moroccan Hospitality
Whether you stay in a traditional riad (a Moroccan guesthouse) or join a cooking class, interacting with locals is where the magic really happens.

When Is the Best Time to Visit Morocco?

The best times to visit Morocco are during the spring (March to May) and fall (September to November) when the weather is warm but not too hot. I personally visited in March and was lucky enough to witness the orange blossoms in full bloom—it added a fragrant, floral magic to every walk.

Avoid the peak of summer (June–August) if you’re not a fan of extreme heat, especially in cities like Marrakesh and Fez.

Final Thoughts: Why Morocco Belongs on Your Travel Bucket List

If you’re looking for a destination that offers rich culture, historical depth, adventure, and beauty, Morocco is a must. It’s affordable, photogenic, and endlessly fascinating—a place that will challenge and change you in the best way possible.

And trust me: go before it becomes too crowded. Morocco is rising in popularity, and it’s only a matter of time before the secret is out.

Ready, set… Marrakesh! 🙂 Happy travels!
