My last time in India was during the season of Holi in 2019. As a 20-something backpacker, I was exploring India after visiting Sri Lanka en route to Nepal before returning to explore Northern India. From Kochi to Alleppey and Munnar to Jaipur, Agra, Varanasi and more; I was hooked!
The vibrant colors, unique sounds, pani puri, temples and stellar people watching had me. Even as an experienced traveler, I was stunning by India. I had been traveling in Asia for around 4 months in countries that included: Thailand, Myanmar, Malaysia, Singapore, and Sri Lanka before heading onward. Later during that trip, I would earn my ESL (English-as-a-Second Language) certification and living in Hanoi, Vietnam for nearly 2 years, but my first time in India would stay with me. At that time, I swore I would go back. Yet, then the pandemic hit and many countries went into lockdown. During that time, I opted to go back to school and got a master’s degree in Learning Sciences (Educational Psychology) and began working in the United States after some time out of the country, but my desire to visit India remained.
Fast forward to 2026 and I am planning to visit for the first time since 2019.
In contrast to my previous trip, I will explore the North East (Kolkata and Kharagpur) and spent some time in and around Mumbai.
Here are some things I am most looking forward to:
Kolkata, India

In Kolkata, I am excited to explore the Victoria Memorial Hall known for gorgeous architecture. I am equally as excited to dive into where local culture of the Eastern region of India is prevalent by visiting places like Dakshineswar Kali Temple and the Indian Museum. To get my shopping fix, I am also awaiting visits to local markets like New Market for bangles and earrings.
Kharagpur, India

While near Kolkata, I am also excited to see IIT Kharagpur. When I was younger, I got extremely into Bollywood films and fondly recall the filming locations featured in ‘Three Idiots’. I am looking forward to exploring an IIT, one of India’s leading institutes up close.
While Kharagpur seems primarily industrial outside of the university, I am likewise excited to people watch, drink chai and juices, and meander around campus.
Mumbai, India

During my last trip to India, I did not visit Mumbai and instead opted for Bangalore and Mysore due to time constraints. This time, I would like to spend at least 3 days (ideally more) in the city. I am eager to see the Gateway of India, a beautiful architectural wonder. After reading about Mumbai, I also recently learned about Elephant Island, home to the UNESCO World Heritage site known for a Shiva temple caved out of rock. I also hear that Khotachiwadi is a respite from some of the busy parts of the city. Additionally, I am looking forward to trying the regional Indian food.
Lonavala, India
In the same state of Mumbai is Lonavala, India. Here is some of the most beautiful waterfalls and nature among the Western mountains of India that I have seen. From local landmarks to rivers and waterfalls, I am ecstatic for a peaceful rest in between the sightseeing. High on my list is: Bhaja Budhhist Caves Ancient Buddhist Heritage and Korigad Fort.
Have you been to India? Any of these places specifically? Drop you recommendations as I would love to hear about your experiences.
